Black cod, also known as sablefish, is a true delicacy.
Celebrated for its intensely rich, buttery flavor and velvety mouthfeel, black cod is a favorite of chefs around the world. And, with even more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids than salmon, black cod is also one of the healthiest seafood choices. The high fat content makes it a very forgiving fish to cook, as it doesn’t easily dry out.
This black cod was caught by Captain James Phillips on F/V Pacific Dawn, a member of Seafood Producers Cooperative (SPC), the single largest fisherman’s co-op in the country. Founded in 1944, SPC has over 500 commercial fishermen dedicated to providing the highest quality, sustainably-caught seafood.
Found in only the North Pacific Ocean, black cod is not actually a member of the cod family. It is a deep water species, living in depths as far as 9,000 feet. It has a long sleek body with dark brown, gray, or black scales.
Black cod caught in Alaska with longlines is rated a Good Alternative by Seafood Watch. This fishery is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
